The Classic Early Recordings in Chronological Order / Django Reinhardt ― 2007/11/07

ジャンゴ・ラインハルトがヴァイオリンのステファン・グラッペリと組み作ったフランス・ホット・クラブ5重奏団での1934年から1939年にかけての演奏をデジタルリマスターした５枚組アルバムだ。

演奏のすばらしさはもとより、このCDの特徴は、実に音質が良いことである。時はSPレコード(78回転レコード)の時代であり、特にフランスでの演奏などは、その後の戦火の中で良く残っていたものだと思うのである。SPレコードの原盤は、鉄の円盤の上にアセテートを塗り、録音時に振動を直接針でアセテート盤の上に刻みつけていくという手法だと思うのだが、そうした原盤が戦火の中で残っている事が実に興味深い。原盤が「どこにどのように保管されていたのか」については知りうる立場にはないため、どなたか御教唆いただければと思うのである。

いくつかの曲は、その昔のAMラジオで中学生の頃に聞いた記憶があるのだが、音質の悪いAMラジオだったためか、それとも元のアルバムの音が悪かったのか、このCDで聞こえる音とは別物となっている。こうしたデジタルリマスターに伴う音のダイナミズムの減衰という問題は、SP時代のように極端に大きな音が録音できない時代の作品を復刻する場合にはまったく気にならず、ノイズの低減などについて逆にきわめて有効だという事がわかった。

いずれにしても珠玉の音楽が楽しめる素晴らしアルバム。

プレス・オン／デヴィッド・T・ウオーカー ― 2007/08/01

すでに発売から３０年を経ているのだが、未だに古さを感じさせないアルバムだ。R'&Bからジャズに至る要素をすべて包含していて、しかも色香が漂うギタープレイである。

デヴィッド・T・ウオーカーの文字通り最高傑作と言える。

彼自身は吉田美和(ドリカム)のソロ活動の際、そのギタリストとして参加してもいるし、クルセダースの有力ギタリスト候補としても取り上げられた(結局ラリー・カールトンになったのだが)。

いわゆるフュージョン系のサウンドだが、根っからのジャズ系の人達によるフュージョンとは違い、R&Bの色香が強く漂う。このあたりはコーネル・デュプリーと共通するのだが、コーネルの鋭角なギターとは対象的に、デヴィッドの演奏はメロウである。

コーネル・デュプリーの演奏がクラレンス・ゲイトマウス・ブラウンのような鋭角な突き刺す鋭さを内包するスタイルを手本としているのとは対照的に、デヴィッド・T・ウオーカーの醸し出す音の姿はセクシーだ。

ギター演奏の技術は確かだが、単にテクニックという点、指の早さという点では、実は彼以上のギタリストは多分山のようにいる。でも、微妙なタイミングや音色などに、確固たる彼自身が見えるのが素晴らしい。

とにかく３０年も前に、これほどの完成度が高く、しかも「ほら俺上手いでしょ」というような押しつけがましさがないアルバムは希有であり、フュージョン系のギター音楽としては、コーネル・デュプリーの「ティージン」と双璧となる。正直言えば、私個人はコーネルとデヴィッドを聞いた後だと、ラリー・カールトンもリー・リトナーも聞く気すらしないのだ。

Blues, Boogie, and Bop: The Best of the 1940's Mercury Sessions ― 2006/04/06

お洒落である。かってジャズと呼ばれていた音楽がここにある。マーキュリー・レーベルの黄金の1940年代の録音を集めたものである。

ハードでディープなブルース・ファンには最初は物足りないだろうと思うのだが、いや、この七枚組のアルバムの中身はただごとではない。特にアルバート・アモンズのオーケストラは、実にブルースなのが良く分かる。

ボックスセットで、なにやらプラスチックの古いラジオを摸した造形のケースに、紙ジャケットに入ったCDが七枚。ブックレットも英語辞書を片手に楽しく読める。

Clalence Gatemouth Brown ― 2005/09/12

2005年9月10日、偉大なブルースマンのひとりである、クラレンス・ゲイトマウス・ブラウンが亡くなった。ハリケーン・カトリーナによりニューオリンズ近郊の自宅が全壊し、避難していたテキサス州オレンジの姪の家での客死である。

すでに2004年夏には肺ガンで余命半年と宣言されていた身ではあるが、2005年春にはニューオリンズ・ジャズ・フェスティバルなどにも顔を出していた。1924年4月18日、ルイジアナ州ヴィントン生まれ。享年81歳。

私が初めて動くゲイトマウスを見たのは、初来日の時だとばかり思っていたが、どうやらそれは間違いのようだ。伝説のＲ＆Ｂ番組であるThe Beat!!!!のレギュラーバンドのリーダーだったとの事である。この番組は私がまだ子供の頃のものであるから、実はDr.Johnが出ていた回の記憶はしっかりあるのだが、それ以外はうろ覚えである。その演奏のバックを務めていたのだ。当然見ている筈なのである。しかし記憶が曖昧で実に頼りないのが情けない。

四回来日しているのだが、実は見たのは最初の来日時である。ギブソンのファイアーバードというヘヴィメタル好きな人が持つギターを片手に颯爽と日比谷公会堂のステージに登場したのを鮮明に覚えていて、テンガロンハットをかぶったその姿にも、そのギター演奏の巧みさに驚愕したものだ。勿論フィドルも弾いたのである。実はメインアクトはボビー・ブルー・ブランドであった。

ゲイトマウス本人は「ブルースマン」と呼ばれる事を嫌っていたようだ。確かにブルースという範疇を飛び越えた多彩な音楽性を持つのは間違い無い。しかし、その一方でテキサス州ヒューストンを中心とした地域のブルースで、その演奏が大きな影響を与えたのも間違いない。

最期のアルバムであると思える「Back to Bogalusa」はモダーンな作りで文句なく最近のブルース系のアルバムでは出色のもの。

レディ・ブルースは実は苦手だが、楽団のバックに女性ヴォーカルが歌うというタイプのブルースは、苦手な中でも大丈夫だ。

このような楽団をバックに歌うブルースのスタイルはクラシック・ブルースなどと言う名前で分類されているのだが、実は単なるブルースというよりも、むしろビリー・ホリディやダイナ・ワシントンなどにつながるジャズとブルースの狭間の音楽だろう。いや、実はジャズとかブルースなどという分類そのものの意味を問う存在でもあるのだ。

1894年、テネシー州のチャタヌガに生まれ、1920年代を中心として活躍する。1923年にこのアルバムの最初の曲である「Down Hearted Blues」を初レコーディングし、その後名実ともにトップスターとして君臨した。1930年代は恵まれず、ほとんどアル中状態になり、1937年に交通事故で亡くなった。
