ドイツでのAmerican Folk Blues Festivalの録画第二弾。

Sonny Boy Williamsonとはライス・ミラーの事である。

白眉はHowlin' Wolfの演奏であり、ギターのチューニングは大幅に狂っているのだが、そこがまたご愛敬。存在感は圧倒的である。WolfのバックギタリストといえばHubert Sumlinだが、これが若い。まだ若造の顔である。

さらに、ボーナストラックにはマジック・サムの演奏が収録されている。1969年の収録であるから、死亡する直前のものだという事だ。この演奏が収録された年末、マジック・サムはその短い人生に幕を閉じる。夭折した若き天才ブルースマンの天才たる由縁、迸る演奏が聴ける。使用しているギターは Vol.1 のボーナストラックに収録されているEarl Hookerのもので、バックのバンドも同じである。

Blues, Boogie, and Bop: The Best of the 1940's Mercury Sessions ― 2006/04/06

お洒落である。かってジャズと呼ばれていた音楽がここにある。マーキュリー・レーベルの黄金の1940年代の録音を集めたものである。

ハードでディープなブルース・ファンには最初は物足りないだろうと思うのだが、いや、この七枚組のアルバムの中身はただごとではない。特にアルバート・アモンズのオーケストラは、実にブルースなのが良く分かる。

ボックスセットで、なにやらプラスチックの古いラジオを摸した造形のケースに、紙ジャケットに入ったCDが七枚。ブックレットも英語辞書を片手に楽しく読める。
